Yingying took a deep breath and said, “Call the cops.”
Shu Yan raised her brows, feeling a little surprised.
“I am going to beat you to death, you un-familial girl! You really are going to call the cops on us?!”
Yingying’s parents lunged at her and Shu Yan standing in front of her, was the first collateral damage. Just when she was thinking about how to fight back, someone blocked in front of her and grabbed Mother Yingying’s hand.
“Are you alright?”
What was Feng Zeyu doing here?”
Shu Yan shook her head, a little dazed. “I am fine.”
“I’ve already called the cops and they should be here any minute now.” Feng Zeyu happened to be nearby taking care of something and decided to swing by to say hi to Shu Yan since he was already in the area. He didn’t think he’d run into something like this.
“Thank you!”
With the tall and strong Feng Zeyu standing in front of Shu Yan and the other two with the intimidating scar on his face, Yingying’s parents and Li Weiguo dared not say anything anymore.
The cops did arrive quickly. Shu Yan had Zhang Huaxiu open up the store when she went with Yingying to the police station. She told Feng Zeyu before she got inside of the police car and said, “Thanks for everything today. I will take you out to lunch when I free up.”
Inside the car, Shu Yan whispered softly into Yingying’s ear, “Start crying when we arrived at the police station. Cry when you recount the story to them and tell me everything that had happened since you were a child. The worse your crying, the better.”
People have compassion, the worse Yingying cried, the more wronged she seemed, the more the cops would be on her side.
Yingying gave Shu Yan a blank look and started bawling with her arms around Shu Yan.
“I said to start crying when we get to the police station, not now.” Shu Yan’s hearts softened. She put her arms around Yingying and patted her on her shoulder. Her words must have touched where it hurt.
“I… I can’t help it anymore.”
The police had an idea about what was going on and, when they arrived at the police station, and seeing how Yingying cried the entire way and her wronged voice moved everyone, especially the female cops. They knew that some families favor their boys more but something to this extreme was still rare.
“You are both laborers and proletariats. How do you have such old-school thoughts? Boys and girls are equal, how could you sell your daughter for your son? Didn’t you give birth to your daughter also? And you, especially, you are a woman too. Can you relate to her feelings?”
Once they have arrived at the police station, the two who had been aggressive earlier were somewhat intimidated. Li Weiguo, on the other hand, was still equally arrogant.
“I’ve paid money for this. All 50,000 yuan in total. That was most of my life saving. What law did I break?”
“Let me tell you that you did, indeed, break the law. Her parents might have consented, but did she? Arranged married, contractual marriage, and any other means to interfere with one’s free will to wed is against the law. Both you and her parents had broke the law and there could be jail time associated with it,” said a cop as he drummed his fingers on the table.
A female cop poured Yingying a glass of water and, when she saw the bruises that were still over the corners of her eye and corner of her lips, asked, “Did you parents hit you?”
“I…” Yingying had a hiccup. “I wouldn’t agree to it and my dad hit me. They locked me up in the house and I lied that I have agreed before I was able to escape. I don’t want to marry the cripple. He is almost 20 years older than me, almost the age of my father. I have also heard that he’s violent.” The more Yingying thought about it, the sadder she was. She cried so much that she could barely breath.
“Don’t worry. Nobody can force you to wed as long as you don’t agree to it.” The female cop felt particular sad when she saw the way Yingying was.
Over on the other side, Li Weiguo and Yingying’s parents were obviously starting to get frantic. Yingying’s father was still being stubborn, “I gave birth to her and I have raised her. Of course she needs to listen to what I say. Besides, what is so awful about what I am asking of her right now? All I am asking is for her to wed. What’s the problem there? All girls will get married when they grow up.”
